Dental Exams and Cleanings
One of the best actions you can take to protect the health, comfort, and beauty of your smile is to maintain a routine dental exam and professional dental cleaning schedule in our office.
With regular appointments at St. Anthony Village Dentistry, you are giving us the opportunity to closely monitor your oral health and notice any changes that put your health at risk.
Comprehensive Dental Exams
Our comprehensive dental exams are designed to identify and allow you to address any dental conditions while they are still small and treatable.
Dr.Nicole Hoiland covers all of the main areas that can affect your health at each exam. They include:
A tooth-by-tooth exam – this is an opportunity for Dr. Hoiland to perform a visual inspection of your teeth. She looks for conditions such as decay, fractures, excessive wear, recession, and chips. Each of these conditions can lead to emergency appointments and even tooth loss if not addressed early on.
Jaw function – Do you have a clicking, popping, or locking jaw? This can indicate a condition known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ or TMJD). Joint conditions can cause pain, headaches, excessive tooth wear, and are often progressive disorders. Treating them early can protect your jaw joints from continued damage and painful symptoms.
Oral cancer screening – Since your dentist spends more time looking inside your mouth than anyone else, they are often the first to notice suspicious pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions. Like many cancers, the sooner you seek treatment, the better your prognosis.
Soft tissue exam – Your periodontal (gum) health is essential to your oral health and the health of your entire body. Researchers have linked gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. By addressing the infection in your gums, you are not only protecting your teeth, but also your overall health.
Our periodic exams occur generally in conjunction with a cleaning appointment or periodontal maintenance appointment. This is an opportunity for Dr. Hoiland to perform an oral cancer screening, soft tissue exam and visually inspect your teeth and look for changes from your last visit.
Professional Dental Cleanings
While it is true that some patients battle tartar and gum disease more than others, even the most diligent patients cannot reach every surface of their teeth with brushing and flossing alone. A professional dental cleaning removes tartar and bacteria from the hard-to-reach places such as between your teeth.
Regular dental cleanings can protect you from periodontal disease and allow our hygienists to note any significant changes in your gums that may indicate a serious medical issue.
Our hygienists are gentle, thorough, and professional. They can share home care practice tips, product recommendations, and even nutritional suggestions that can improve your oral health. They work with our patients closely so that they achieve and maintain the best oral health possible.
