Periodontal (Gum Disease) Treatment

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection in your gums caused by bacteria. Bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments and the food particles left behind after eating provide them with the fuel they need to reproduce. Sugary and starchy foods, especially, give them a perfect food source to help them multiply quickly.

With regular brushing and flossing, you can remove those food particles before bacteria have a chance to reproduce enough to cause gum disease. If you have certain medical conditions or if you do not have consistent home care, bacteria can collect beneath your gum line and cause an infection.

Untreated gum disease can result in tooth loss, bone loss, bad breath, tender, swollen gums, gum recession, and sensitivity.

Periodontal Evaluation

When you come to our St. Anthony, MN dental office, we perform a periodontal exam to determine the health of your gums. Healthy gums fit tightly around your teeth, creating a seal that keeps out bacteria. We use a measurement to test each tooth for periodontal pockets and bleeding. This exam helps us to determine the type of dental cleaning you require.

The Whole Body Connection

Researchers have linked gum disease to systemic conditions including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, and even low birth-weight babies. Because of the inflammatory nature of infections, including periodontal disease, your whole body health is compromised.

Periodontal Treatments

In periodontal disease's early stages, called gingivitis, we can provide you with good home care advice, a thorough cleaning, and a recommendation for products that can help your gums heal properly. Gingivitis is often reversible when treated early and with consistent home care. That means brushing twice daily, flossing at least once daily, and eating a healthy diet. We will closely monitor your health to make sure your gums stay free from infection.

As periodontal disease progresses, we may recommend a therapy regimen that focuses on removing bacteria and tartar (hardened biofilm caused by bacteria and food particles) from below your gumline. If your gums have deep pockets, we may recommend localized antibiotic treatments to assist with healing.

At St. Anthony Village Dentistry, our hygienists are gentle and helpful. They can recommend a hygiene appointment frequency that will help you stay healthy and free from gum disease. They work with our patients, without guilt or blame, to get back on track to good oral health and overall wellness.
